An alarming headline from today's Limerick Post. While I know that Tesco have (over the last number of years) been aggressively seeking to increase their presence in the Irish supermarket landscape, I hadn't realised quite how far their plans for "Total Spectrum Dominance" had advanced:
Abbeyfeale (for those who don't know) is a small market town that straddles the border of Counties Limerick and Kerry. Only a couple of thousand souls call it home.
Why it requires a staggering 97 Tesco outlets is anybody's guess. Perhaps a long-term experiment is being carried out by Tesco (or parties unknown) to measure the psychological, civic and sociological effects on a small populace of a gross over-exposure to consumer choices. Actually, there is but one choice - Tesco (all 97 of it/them).
Resistance is futile.

Ah yes, Abbeyfeale, or AbbeyFAIL as they like to call it themselves. I can mock you see, as my parents are two of the souls that call it home, I had the great pleasure of attending their great convent school!
October 12th, 2007 at 7:55 am97 Tescos, but I bet you still can’t get the one vital ingredient for whatever dinner you had planned for that evening.
October 12th, 2007 at 10:45 amMaz, Given that I attended an all-boys secondary establishment the phrase “convent school” has always had an erotic ring to it. I’m sure it was everything my pubescent fantasies imagined it to be.
Simon, My dinner plans are usually quite modest so I’m sure Abbeyfail’s 97 Tescos would suffice for my needs.
October 13th, 2007 at 7:14 pmDidn’t Springsteen have a song about Tesco a few years back?
“There’s 97 Tesco’s but the shopping list is wrong”
No… mistaken.. his song was about TV.

October 16th, 2007 at 9:51 amGreat stuff. I love how Tesco’s slogan changed from “Every Little Helps” to “We control every aspect of your lives”.
Your typo is revealingly megalomaniac. It’s a bit like the time I responded to the job interview question “Why do you want to work in O’Brien’s Sandwich Bars?” by answering “I wish to destroy mankind”.
I’d meant to say “I like serving people coffee”…
