It's all the more effective for being the only (I think) physical evidence of a malevolent creature &lt;em&gt;at all&lt;/em&gt; in the story.

Even then, as you suggest, it is only described in the language of touch and not sight.

In terms of what remains un&lt;em&gt;said&lt;/em&gt; (as opposed to what remains un&lt;em&gt;seen&lt;/em&gt;) the ending is fabulous.

The bit where Dunning feels the hairy snout under the pillow is fantastic! I'd have shat myself if I'd read that as a kid. It'd be tough to pull off a scare like that onscreen, as so much depends on the lack of a clear picture.

The demon in Curse of the Demon is pretty laughable [great as the movies is]. The snout is simply terrifying!</description>
