My stated reason for adopting Romania was (see above) "because memories of their 90s status as the 'European Brazil' still linger." Well, they don't linger much anymore! Yesterday's stinking 0-0 draw with France saw to that.

Come back Florin Răducioiu, Gheorghe Hagi et al - your country is calling.

Stanners, your "citizen of the world" attitude is refreshing and commendable. Either that or you're just looking to latch onto someone else's success...

I've chosen three teams to hitch my fortunes to as well - Romania, Spain & Croatia.

Romania - because memories of their 90s status as the "European Brazil" still linger. Spain - because I lived there myself (and because of Rafa Benitez). Croatia - because...well...because they gave us the unforgettable sight of a miserable Steve McLaren clinging forlornly to an umbrella! And they play (well at least they did) nice football.

Why limit yourself to just the one team, Sinead? The great advantage of not having your nation represented is that you can adopt other teams willy-nilly.

I've taken on 3 so far and so have tripled my chances of reflected glory: Czech Republic, family connection; Italy, work sweepstake; Spain as I live in Bilbao. This last one´s a bit dodgy as Basque associates might not fully appreciate me following the fortunes of the Spanish state. Portugal, I´ve been there, and Turkey, I´ve never been there, are possible replacements for the third slot.

Anyway, Poland looked pretty good last night I thought. But I urge you to take on another team before things really get going.

They're pretty damn "under" alright - if you consider their recent major tournament form - and they're not only up against Germany, but England-killers Croatia as well.

Having said that they qualified in some style, topping a group that contained potential winners Portugal. Added to that they have the ever-reliable Leo Beenhakker in charge, so there are signs of hope.

You just never know with the Poles. They swing from impressive to abject with frequency. A few months ago, for example, they lost 0-3 to the USA in a friendly match at home!
