Hey Paul.

You're most welcome. It's a long time since volumes blew/thrilled my mind like your Hanks collections. Hanks' work manages (somehow) to be haunting, brutal, hilarious, stiff, elegant and deeply sad all at the same time! Never seen anything like it. Possibly because there isn't anything like it.

Frank Young's pages are a great find. There's a panel on page 2 of the second story where "Rocky Stone" turns his back to the reader - classic Hanksian composition! He uses it over and over again. The effect is quite unsettling. Deliberately shutting the reader out & making us feel like intruding eavesdroppers.

Nothing for it now but to get to work on volume 3.

Thanks for the kind words about my Fletcher Hanks collections.

BTW: A Christmas miracle, of sorts, has occurred.

Not that anyone cares but me...BUT....there appear to more Fletcher Hanks stories that I missed in what I thought was the Complete Hanks!

I spent a looong time looking at these pages posted by Frank Young:

http://www.trickcoin.net/2009/12/fletcher-hanks-discovery-moe-m-down.html

...and have come to the conclusion that they are, in fact by Hanks. The second story is taken directly from the final Big Red McLane tale with the captions rewritten and the faces re-rendered. The first story really had me stumped, so many of the compositions are un-Hanksian but ultimately tiny details such as hair-rendering, crowd rendering , and big details like, yes, anatomy have made me change my mind.

I knew that sooner or later it would happen: the undiscovered Fletcher Hanks has been discovered.

Maurice Pratt. Dan O'Bannon. Fletcher Hanks. Darth Vader. You're in august and mighty company. Don't let it go to your head (just cos you're rocking that Lex Luthor look).

An Irish Blog Award at this point would be a gross anticlimax.

Though it is surely a cause for concern that Maurice has had a scanner installed amongst the fruit & veg in Rathfarnham shopping centre. what's he really up to?

Maurice is unflappableness personified. Darth Vader suddenly (and inexplicably) materialises in Quinnsworth and, without missing him a beat, he cooly invites him to "look at the scanner". Not the slightest indication of surprise or anxiety. He'd have gone far in the Empire.

The shrug at the end seems to indicate an indifference to whether Vader is impressed or not. "Whatever, Darth!".

I love that ad.

It's Maurice's little shrug as Darth Vader beams out of Quinnsworth that is the magic moment.
